Crepuscular rays appearing to burst from a Cumulus congestus cloud, spotted by Tiziano Bartolucci over Rieti, Lazio, Italy.

CLOUD SHADOWS RENDERED VISIBLE by haze in the atmosphere are known as crepuscular rays. They appear to burst out from a cloud like this towering Cumulus when you are observing them as the sunlight shines towards you. The layer of atmospheric haze onto which the cloud casts its shadow is in fact below the cloud’s summit. The shadow is therefore nearer to you. The effect of perspective means that the nearer shadow looks larger than the cloud and the rays appear to fan outwards as they approach.
